How To Make Homemade Butter

Make your own fresh and creamy butter!

Now, this was a first for me, this summer I wanted to see if I could make some homemade butter for my family. I was curious, first of all, could I do it? And second of all, how would it taste?

The first answer is yes, and it was really easy! And the second is that it tastes SO fresh and So creamy. You really need to try it! Let me tell you how!

The How To

Pour a carton of heavy whipping cream into a large bowl. Add 1/2 tsp salt for lightly salted butter (this is optional).

Mix on high to medium-high speed with a stand mixer or hand mixer.

During the process of making butter, you’ll see the cream go through a couple of stages. First, you’ll get some soft whipped cream, then you’ll get stiff whipped cream, but if you keep going the cream will form tiny lumps and you’ll see some milk separate from the mixture into the bottom of the bowl. This is when you know you have made butter!

Tip: This mixing process can take 20-30 minutes. So be patient!

Tip: You can use a stand mixer, hand mixer, food processor, blender, or a jar (shaking method). All these methods work, you are just looking for when the butter solids separate from the milk.

Next, place a strainer on another large bowl and pour the butter and milk into the strainer. Press the butter with a spatula getting out as much milk as you can. The milk at the bottom of the bowl is buttermilk! You can save this in a mason jar in your fridge for baking. (It will last up to two weeks in the fridge)

After pouring out the buttermilk, pour 1 cup of cold water over the butter. Little amounts at a time turning and pressing the butter with your hands or a spatula. It is important to rinse the butter thoroughly and get out as much of the buttermilk as you can. This will help the butter stay fresher longer in your fridge.

One rinsed, squeeze or press the butter to get rid of excess moisture. Transfer to butter dish or any container and refrigerate (I like to use a large ramekin). Homemade butter will last for 2-3 weeks in the fridge.

Tip: Before refrigerating, you can mix in herbs or seasonings to make flavored butter!
