Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chex Mix

Pour the entire box of Chex Mix into a large mixing bowl. Set aside.

Tip: You can use a leftover large brown paper shopping bag instead, add the chocolate mixture, and shake away! Finish by shaking on the powdered sugar coating. Rip open and lay flat at the end to dry and you don’t need a baking sheet.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate and Peanut Butter

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth. This should take about 1-1.5 minutes. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 3: Coat the Chex Mix

Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Chex Mix. Gently stir with a spatula until all the Chex pieces are evenly coated with the chocolate mixture.

Step 4: Add the Powdered Sugar

Transfer the chocolate-coated Chex Mix into a large resealable plastic bag. Add the powdered sugar. Seal the bag and shake vigorously until all the Chex pieces are well coated with the powdered sugar.

Step 5: Cool and Serve

Spread the Muddy Buddies out on a large baking sheet to cool and set. Once cooled, transfer to a serving bowl or store in an airtight container.

Step 6: Enjoy!

Dig in and enjoy this sweet, crunchy treat! Muddy Buddies are perfect for snacking, parties, or even as a gift.

Tips for the Best Muddy Buddies

  • Mix Gently: When combining the Chex Mix with the chocolate mixture, be gentle to avoid breaking the cereal pieces.
  • Even Coating: Make sure the powdered sugar coats every piece of the Chex Mix for the best flavor and texture. Coat every piece evenly or leave chunks of gooey chocolate, powdery chex stuck together, yum!
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, you can refrigerate it.

Recipe Variations

  • Nut-Free: Substitute the peanut butter with sunflower seed butter or almond butter for a nut-free version.
  • Extra Crunch: Add in some pretzels or nuts for extra crunch and flavor.
  • Festive Touch: Mix in some colorful M&Ms or sprinkles for a festive look, perfect for holidays or themed parties.
